While the design might be slightly uninspiring, the Hatton Steel colour means that this sofa will work in any room. It has more of a firm feel than some of its velvet contemporaries, but it is still comfortable to sit on – and the slightly reclined back rest means you relax in relative comfort. It is also good value for money due to its multi-functionality – by day, it’s a sofa with a chaise end (ideal for stretching out and binge-watching Netflix) but by night it transforms into a sofa bed. If you wanted a more comfortable or striking sofa for your living room, this might not be the best choice for you – although it could work in the guest room.
The new leather Matera at Heal’s is our leather sofa of choice; the leather is buttery, with pleated detail on the seat, arms and back cushion. Heal’s prides itself on taking care of both the frame and the fabric when it comes to upholstery; it’s a good bet for a quality, durable buy (if you like leather but are after a more affordable, two-seater leather sofa, check out the Lyle Tan Premium Leather 2-seater sofa, £1,440 in the sale, habitat.co.uk). We like the clean lines, thin arms and slim metal legs of the Matera, but if you have particular requirements, it’s worth noting that Heal’s has also introduced a ‘Designed by You’ service. It’s the most customisable, bespoke service to be found on the high street at an approachable price point; you can choose your back, choose your arms (slim, wide, high or scroll?), choose your seat cushions, feet and most importantly, select your fabric from literally hundreds of options.
