Top Summer Reads for 2021
This week, we caught up with Lizzy Dent, author of feel-good romcom The Summer Job, to find out more about the best books to read this summer. Lizzy’s debut novel, published by Viking Books (part of Penguin UK), is due to be released this summer, and has been perfectly timed to allow you to escape the real world for a bit into an adventure full of wine, the beautiful Scottish landscape, and the misadventures that might arise if you try to impersonate your best friend!
Lizzy has shared with us her top summer reads, which you’ll no doubt fall in love with – wherever you may end up this summer! From curling up on an armchair on lazy Sundays, to stretching out in the garden on a hot afternoon, there’s something for everyone in Lizzy’s Top Summer Reads for 2021…
Books to read in the garden
Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I can’t think of a more summer-ready read than this absolute gem from Taylor Jenkins Reid. A sunlit, dreamy story about the rise and fall of a hit seventies band (loosely based on Fleetwood Mac). Curl up and be whisked away to a sun-soaked pool, or a sandy beach and some California sunshine – must be accompanied by cocktails.
Where the Rhythm Takes You by Sara Dass
You will be totally love drunk after imbibing the romantic vibes pouring from this cracking debut (out next month), set on the island of Tobago. Reyna is just surviving after the loss of her mother when her first love, and now super-music-star boyfriend, comes home to shake up her heart. This is a pure escapist novel with incredible heart. Dass’ writing style is sparky and easy-breezy, making this a perfect garden read; preferably enjoyed from a gently swaying hammock.
Books to read on the sofa
You & Me On Vacation by Emily Henry
Another whip smart contemporary romance from my favourite auto-buy author! In this gorgeous read, Henry’s fresh take on the friends-to-lovers trope comes to life with her usual electric dialogue and sharply crafted plot. Snuggle into your beanbag on a rainy summer’s day and let this swoony love story transport you. This is my absolute top pick for 2021.
Riders by Jilly Cooper
This is the perfect book for a country weekend getaway. Jilly Cooper’s ultimate eighties giggle takes on the crazy world of professional equestrian riders, their beautiful lovers and their oh-so-scandalous escapades. Classic Ranch Raunch that is perfect after a hike or a horse ride, stretched out on the sofa with a straight whiskey and a man called Rupert. I reach for it whenever I need a pick-me-up!
Books to read whilst out and about
Anxious People by Fredrick Bregman
A brilliantly crafted tale about a bank robber, a hostage crisis and a bunch of idiots. It’s incredibly funny and full of heart — with two very clever twists, one of which stayed with me for days after I had finished. Backman’s characterisation is so astute and well observed. This book is perfect for reading on a rickety outdoor table at some achingly cool hipster coffee bar on your next city break.
Outback Dreams (Bunyip Bay Series) by Rachael Johns
I am a sucker for an Aussie rural romance, and Rachael Johns’ Bunyip Bay series is the gold standard. Sexy, heart-felt, feel-good romance at its best. For those missing Australia, or dreaming of a holiday when we’re allowed to travel there again – this is the book series for you. Get some bangers on the barbie, pour yourself a cold beer and enjoy this on a baking summer afternoon.
The Summer Job – Lizzy Dent
And of course, there is Lizzy’s very own Summer read! The Summer Job is a laugh-out-loud novel based in the Scottish highlands, following the main protagonist, Birdie, as she spontaneously takes on the job of a sommelier in place of her best friend. From relatable misadventures and hilarious incidents, to slightly more emotional and moving situations, this book is the ultimate form of escapism, and we can’t wait for you to read it.
