How to style Classic Blue in your home

It’s official, Pantone’s colour of the year for 2020 is Classic Blue (19-4052).

According to Pantone, Classic Blue was chosen as the colour of the year for its ability to install calm, confidence and connection, acting as a dependable shade as we enter a new decade. But what does this mean for interior design in 2020? Giving ‘feeling blue’ a whole new meaning, we’ve taken a deeper look into how Classic Blue will influence our homes, and offered up some styling tips to help you embrace the colour of the moment.

Classic Blue and Yellow – a Match Made in Heaven

Blue and yellow are a match made in heaven, and with the 2020 colour of the year being Classic Blue, now is the perfect time to explore this bold colour combination for your boudoir. Here the Pitch Blue shade from Farrow and Ball on the walls provides depth, whilst the Canary cotton matt velvet on our mid-century Audrey bed adds a pop of colour and brightness to the room that will bring a smile to your face all year round. Style with scatter cushions and a throw in various shades of citrus and navy hues for the perfect finishing touches.

Alternatively, opt for a Classic Blue bed with bright yellow and crisp white accents for a space that is fresh and bright all year round. Here, our Rosalie bed has been upholstered in our stunning Prussian Blue cotton matt velvet which creates a luxurious and elegant feel with its button tufted headboard, whilst the room is brightened up by the Claude armchair in Canary cotton matt velvet. Introduce various patterns in the same Classic Blue tone through accessories such as scatter cushionsrugs and bed linen to create interest and depth to the space.

Classic Blue to Make a Statement

With velvet sofas looking like they’re a trend that’s here to stay, Classic Blue tones can be incorporated into a room with the addition of a statement blue velvet sofa, such as our Albie in Cobalt smart velvet, with our matching Harper footstool.  The blue velvet creates a striking focal point and works perfectly with the emerald jewel tone on the walls for a fun and playful colour scheme that’s inspired by the stunning colours that run through peacock feathers.

Classic Blue for the Whole Room

Keep things calm and cohesive by threading variations of Classic Blue throughout a single space with furniture, walls and accessories combining perfectly to create a dreamy and impactful Classic Blue room. Here our Stella corner sofa is styled in Prussian Blue cotton matt velvet, which sits seamlessly against the darker grey/blue walls, painted in Gentleman’s Gray by Benjamin Moore. The Bengal rug has variations of blue running through it, whilst also bringing a brighter element to the room, and the lamp base and vase are the perfect finishing touches. By styling Classic Blue with tones of grey through small touches such our Erica Davies scatter cushions and Armour smart velvet scatter cushions, as well as lamp shades, you’ll create a more sophisticated take on Pantone’s Colour of the Year.

Classic Blue as a Background Colour

Sometimes, Classic Blue works just as effectively as a background colour as it does when it’s the centre of attention. Here we’ve used a traditional panelled wall painted in deep Classic Blue to act as the backdrop for our luxurious velvet Betty armchairs. The Classic Blue background allows the Neptune velvet and Butterscotch velvet armchairs to take centre stage and creates a space that is both colourful and confident.

Another prime example of using Classic Blue as a backdrop for a statement piece is with our Oscar Button Seat sofa in stunning Olive cotton matt velvet. Here, the New York State of Mind paint from Benjamin Moore is the perfect shade of blue to allow the green velvet to stand out – bringing a sense of the theatrical to the room. This colour combination of sky blue and leafy green works perfectly for traditional style spaces and also is styled beautifully with rustic wooden pieces as a nod back to nature.

Classic Blue as a Pop of Colour

Classic Blue is a popular choice when looking to inject colour into an otherwise neutral or paired back colour scheme. Our Aissa sofa in Cobalt smart velvet demonstrates this perfectly, creating a focal point in an open, bright yet neutrally decorated space. By keeping the surroundings clean and simple, the deep blue velvet is really impactful. The addition of scatter cushions and accessories provides the opportunity for you to update the look with the changing of seasons, using different colours and patterns to transform the feel of the room. Here the yellow cushions, lamp and vases add colour and brightness, perfect for springtime.

With 4 of our top 5 fabrics being shades of blue, there’s no doubt that blue is universally popular in the home. Whether using variations of classic blue within a single space, using blue as inspiration to accessorise, or injecting bold colours with a single piece of blue furniture, we think Classic Blue is a colour that is here to stay.
