Follow the three Rs of home renovation – read, research and reinvent
“When renovating a property, make sure you do your research on your builders, insist on visiting their previous projects to make sure you are happy with the finish. When it comes to styling, I still read nearly every interiors magazine religiously which provides a great source of inspiration for me. My mother was such a keen interior addict – our house always had the latest paint colours and she was always rearranging the furniture!”
Play with mismatching patterns and furnishings
“I always start with the basics, so the walls and the floor coverings. I like to keep these neutral and classic so that when I add the furniture it stands out and looks amazing. I love how eclectic you can be these days with strong, clashing patterns and mismatching furniture new and old. Gone are the days of matchy matchy three-piece-suites! Anything goes so long as there is a common theme linking them all together (hence why I love keeping floors and walls neutral).”
Let your furniture do the talking
“When renovating our home, we wanted to make the living area element of our open plan kitchen/living room feel like a defined space so opted for sofa.com’s Izzy chaise sofa. We also wanted a sofa that the whole family could comfortably watch a movie on together and our Izzy is the most comfortable sofa I’ve ever owned! I am always drawn to mid-century inspired furniture so loved Izzy’s mid-century inspired legs, which work perfectly with our home’s Scandi vibe.”
Make the most of your space
“We had been on the look-out for a stylish sofa bed for years so when I realised that the Bluebell style also came as a sofa bed all my prayers had been answered! I have always adored the shape of sofa.com’s Bluebell sofa as it’s so billowy and inviting! Our playroom now doubles up as spare bedroom for guests, so the Bluebell sofa bed fits the bill for both perfectly.”
Don’t forfeit your style to keep things family friendly
“I really don’t think these days you have to compromise too much on style whilst keeping a house child friendly! When I visited the sofa.com showroom in Bath they introduced me to the smart velvet range which meant I could have my cake and eat it….a velvet that is wipeable……the dream! We have some friends who have decided not to have any decent furniture until the kids are older but for me I just couldn’t live like that, I want to enjoy my house all the time and right now! That being said if my children ever have a play date, I always whack a great big throw over the sofas just in case!”
