Tips for Furnishing a New Space From Scratch
Tips for Furnishing a New Space From Scratch
My wife and I recently purchased a new home. We upgraded from a one bedroom to three bedrooms and decided to furnish the new place from scratch. While it’s very exciting to have a blank canvas and figure out what style of décor/furniture we want to go with it has also been a little overwhelming at times. When staring at a blank room or an entire house for that matter it can be difficult to know how to get started.
While we are still in the process of getting everything figured out here are a few tips that have helped us get past the initial hurdle.
1. Figuring Out Your Style
Before you can do anything you need to figure out what style you want to go with. If you don’t already know, Pinterest is an excellent place for ideas. My wife and I set up a Pinterest board that we shared. We added all kinds of different things to it and were able to see which style preferences we had in common. From there we were able to narrow it down to something we both liked.
Having a well defined style is very useful as it helps you pick items that will maintain a consistent design flow throughout the home. Another important thing to keep in mind is the architecture of the home. For example, it wouldn’t make sense to put traditional styled furniture in a modern style loft.
2. Start With Big Items First
After choosing a style, we focused on the bigger pieces for each room. Specifically a dining table, a sofa, and bed for the master. By narrowing it down to those three pieces we were able to keep the flow of the home consistent.
Once you have the bigger items in place it makes it much easier to move forward, as you can base the rest of your choices off of those items. This also allows you to take your time in finding non essential pieces or accessories.
3. Optimize Your Budget
Like most people, we wanted to make sure we were putting our money to the best use. We decided that some items were worth spending more money on than others.
For example, people spend large amounts of their life on a mattress. About 26 years in fact! A mattress is essential to your quality of life, so we decided that we didn’t want to skimp on that. A similar point can be made about your sofa as well.
Once we decided that more of our budget would go toward those two items. It gave us a better idea as to what other things we could buy next and what will need to wait.
The most important thing is taking your time. Your home is where your life is spent and memories made. Take the time to create a space that makes you feel proud to call it home.
